Ephesians 5:22-23 (ESV)

22Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.23For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.

Main points

1) Wives, submit to your husbands

2) Husbands, love your wives

3) A profound mystery

Some relevant Scriptures (all Scripture references are in ESV) 1) Wives, submit to your husbands

● Proverbs 31:10-12: An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.

● Proverbs 12:18: There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

● Proverbs 21:19: It is better to live in a desert land than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.

● Proverbs 31:25-26: Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

2) Husbands, love your wives

● 1 Peter 3:7: Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker

vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of

life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

● Proverbs 31:29: “Many women have done excellently,

but you surpass them all.”

● Proverbs 5:18-19: Let your fountain be blessed, and

rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.

3) A profound mystery

● 1 Corinthians 6:17: But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

● Colossians 3:3-4: For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

● Romans 6:5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. ● Romans 7:4: Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.
